NSU Eyes Season Split with Florida Southern Saturday

Mocs edged Sharks 77-74 in year’s first meeting earlier this month

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The last time Nova Southeastern traveled to the Jenkins Field House, big man Harrison Goodrick recorded a monster 13-point, 21-rebound effort to lead the Sharks past Florida Southern 90-84 in February 2016. Such performances will once again be key this time around if Nova Southeastern is to rid itself of its current three-game slide when both teams square off Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET.

Goodrick notched a solid 15 points and eight rebounds when the Sharks and Moccasins met in early January, but instead it was Troy Spears that stepped to the forefront with a career-high 24 points despite the slim 77-74 defeat. The junior finished 7-of-15 from the field including 4-of-9 from beyond the arc, however, his half-court heave at the buzzer missed off the mark to prevent a chance at overtime.

The Sharks fell in similar fashion to Tampa this past Wednesday, coming up short in the final seconds of the eventual 70-65 setback. Dwayne Gibson helped lift Nova Southeastern back in front of the Spartans by notching 12 of his team-high 17 points in the second half. The Sharks were unable to hold on for good, though, as head coach Gary Tuell's club fell by five points or fewer for the fifth time in eight tries.

Nova Southeastern last captured a true road win a year ago against the Mocs, but has a chance to shake that streak versus a Florida Southern squad that has compiled just a modest 6-5 record at home this season and enters the weekend fresh off a 94-88 home loss to Rollins – a team Nova Southeastern held to 56 points en route to victory roughly two weeks prior.

Guard Michael Volovic tallied a game-high 30 points against the Tars, and currently leads the team in scoring with an average of 15.2 points per game. Jeremiah Davis ranks second on the club with 13.8 points, while Jarel Spellman has anchored the Mocs' defense with a league-best 2.9 blocks per contest.

David Halberstam will have the call live from Lakeland, Florida. For complete coverage of the action, log onto NSUSharks.com or follow the Sharks on Twitter @NSU_MBasketball.
